Refracting Telescopes
Reflecting telescopes have been in use ever since they were invented in 1609. They have yielded some beautiful and detailed images of the universe. However due to the inherent problems of creating large lenses that are used in refracting telescopes the larger telescopes are reflecting telescopes.
The maximum physical size limit for refracting telescope lenses diameter is about 1 meter (40 inches). This size restriction dictates that the majority of large optical research telescopes built since the 1900s have been reflecting telescopes.
